Environment

McAfee Anti-Virus Scanning Engine 6.x.00
McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.x

Summary

This article describes how to delay the download of the latest Anti-Virus Scanning Engine from McAfee AutoUpdate sites to an unmanaged computer running VSE 8.x.

NOTE:
  • An example of a managed computer would be one controlled via ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO).
  • Not updating to the latest Engine can impact VSE functionality. For more information, see KB66741.
There are several methods to disable the engine update on an unmanaged computer running VSE 8.x. Use the following table to select one of the available options:
Solution
Prevention Method
Solution 1 Disable the option Get newer detection engine and DATs if available.
Solution 2 Disable AutoUpdate tasks and manually run the daily DAT executable.
Solution 3 Remove NAIHttp and NAIFtp from the local AutoUpdate repository list.

Solution

Disable the option Get newer detection engine and DATs if available:
  1. Click Start, Program Files, McAfee, VirusScan Console.
  2. Double-click the AutoUpdate task and deselect Get newer detection engine and DATs if available.
  3. Click OK and exit the VirusScan Console.
IMPORTANT: Do not deselect Get newer detection definition files if available. This action completely stops the local VSE software from updating the Engine from any listed AutoUpdate repository via the AutoUpdate task.

Solution

Disable AutoUpdate tasks and manually run the daily DAT executable.

When you disable the VSE AutoUpdate task completely, you must run the daily XDAT package manually on local computers. An XDAT is a SuperDAT package that contains only the daily DAT files. You can apply XDAT files using login scripting or similar third-party utilities.

To disable the VirusScan Enterprise AutoUpdate task:
  1. Click Start, Program Files, McAfee, VirusScan Console.
  2. Double-click the AutoUpdate task and click Schedule.
  3. Deselect Enable (scheduled task runs at specified time).
  4. Click OK twice and exit the VirusScan Console.
NOTE: You can download XDAT files from https://www.mcafee.com/enterprise/en-us/downloads/security-updates.html. The file name is ####xdat.exe (where: #### is an incremental number for the DAT of the day. Example: 7042xdat.exe).

Solution

Remove NAIHttp or NAIFtp from the local AutoUpdate repository list.

Remove NAIHttp or NAIFtp from the local AutoUpdate repository list and select an alternative repository that contains an older Engine and the current DAT files. This keeps your DAT updates going, but ensures that the Engine is never automatically updated.

To disable NAIHttp or NAIFtp:
  1. Click Start, Program Files, McAfee, VirusScan Console
  2. From the menu, click Tools, Edit AutoUpdate Repository List.
  3. Deselect NAIHttp or NAIFtp, and then click OK.
  4. Exit the VirusScan Console.
IMPORTANT: If you do not want to upgrade the Engine, do not select the option to update at the end of an installation, or upgrade to a new version of VSE. Default installation settings can cause the latest Engine files to be pulled from the McAfee Labs site as a result.
