McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.x

Summary

This article describes how to determine the product version, DAT version, Scan Engine version, and Build Numbers for VirusScan Enterprise in Windows environments.

Solution

Knowing the VSE Version, DAT Version, and Scan Engine Version is essential when troubleshooting. The best way to determine this information is through the About screen. Alternatively, you can verify the VSE file versions using Windows Explorer.

When a patch is applied, the relevant files are updated and the About screen displays the new patch level. Details of files updated are in the readme file that accompanies each patch. Hotfixes applied are not displayed.

To view product information in the About VirusScan Enterprise screen:

From the VSE icon in the system tray
  1. In the task bar, right-click the VirusScan icon.
  2. Select About VirusScan Enterprise.

From the VirusScan console

  1. Click Start, Programs, McAfee, VirusScan Console.
  2. Click Help, About VirusScan Enterprise.

Information to note:

CAUTION: This article contains information about opening or modifying the registry.
  • The following information is intended for System Administrators. Registry modifications are irreversible and could cause system failure if done incorrectly.
  • Before proceeding, Intel Security strongly recommends backing up your registry and understanding the restore process. For more information, see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986.
  • Do not run a .REG file that is not confirmed to be a genuine registry import file.
The version number in the Windows Registry denotes VirusScan Enterprise build numbers and does not reflect Patch or Hotfix versions. To access this information:
  1. Click Start, Run, type regedit, then click OK.
  2. Navigate to the following registry keys:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/McAfee/DesktopProtection]

  3. Although the patch number is easiest to locate in the About window, it is also possible to find this in the registry.
In the right pane, locate the String Value named szProductVer and note its value.

    VSE 8.8 8.8.0.777
    VSE 8.7i 8.7.0.570
    VSE 8.5i 8.5.0.781

  4. In the right pane, locate the String Value named Patch_x and note its value (where x denotes the patch version number).
