Problem

One of the following pop-up errors is displayed when opening Microsoft Outlook. The listed path for VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) varies based on the installed version and whether it is a new installation or an upgrade:

The add-in c:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\Emalscan.dll could not be installed or loaded.

To resolve this problem, use the Detect and Repair on the Help menu.

Problem

On-Delivery Email Scanner does not load.

Cause

To decrease load times, Microsoft Outlook creates a reference file, EXTEND.DAT, which includes the paths to all installed Outlook Extensions. If a new version of VirusScan Enterprise is installed to a different directory than the previous version, the path to Emalscan.dll that is stored in EXTEND.DAT becomes invalid. As a result, the error appears.

Solution

Delete all copies of EXTEND.DAT and reopen Outlook.

Close Microsoft Outlook.
Perform a search on the hard drive (Start, Search) for EXTEND.DAT.
Delete each instance of EXTEND.DAT found.
Open Microsoft Outlook.

Solution

Preventative Advice:

You must install VirusScan Enterprise to the same directory as the previous version.
