How to set primary and secondary VirusScan Enterprise actions that need to take place on discovery of a virus

Summary

If you discover a virus, what happens next depends on how you have configured your On-Access Scanner and On-Demand Scanner.

Solution

On-Access Scan (OAS) configuration:
  1. Click Start, Programs, McAfee, VirusScan Console.
  2. Select Task, On-Access Scanner Properties.
  3. Select one of the following:
     
    • All Processes (For details about understanding High-Risk, Low-Risk, and Default processes configuration and usage, see KB55139.)
    • Default Processes
    • Low-Risk Processes
    • High-Risk Processes 
       
  4. Click Actions.
  5. Set the Primary and Secondary actions from the following options:

    • Deny Access to files
    • Delete files automatically
      NOTE: If you select Delete as the Primary or Secondary action, you are asked to confirm that you are aware of the potential consequences.)
    • Clean files automatically. 
      NOTE: If you select Clean as the Primary action and the threat is not cleanable, then the Clean action taken is to delete the threat from the system. Additionally, you can refer to "What happens when a detection occurs" in the VirusScan Enterprise Product Guide.
  6. Click OK, then exit the VirusScan Console.

Solution

On-Demand Scan (ODS) configuration:
  1. Click Start, Programs, McAfee, VirusScan Console.
  2. For the purpose of this example, create a new On-Demand Scan task by selecting Task, New On-Demand Scan Task.
  3. Change the default task name from New Scan to, for example, Manual ODS task.
  4. Double-click the task and click Actions.
  5. Set the Primary and Secondary actions from the following options:
    NOTE: Any option selected under Primary options, will not appear under Secondary options.

    • Prompt for action (If selected, you can also select Allowed actions. Any option selected under Primary options does not appear under Secondary options.)
    • Continue scanning
    • Clean
      NOTE: If you select Clean as the Primary action and the threat is not cleanable, then the Clean action taken will be to delete the threat from the system. Additionally, you can refer to "What happens when a detection occurs" in the VirusScan Enterprise Product Guide.
    • Delete
      NOTE: If you select Delete as the Primary or Secondary action, you are asked to confirm that you are aware of the potential consequences.
  6. Click OK, then exit the VirusScan Console.
