McAfee Agent 5.x, 4.x

The following message displays when you select Uninstall for the McAfee Agent through Windows Programs and Features or Apps & features (depending on your version of Windows) on client computers, or when you attempt to uninstall McAfee Agent from the command line interface (CLI):
McAfee Agent cannot be removed because other products are still using it
This message can occur even when there are no other McAfee products installed on the client computer.

This issue occurs because the agent is being managed by the ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) server and is in Managed Mode. This is expected behavior to prevent users from removing the agent when there is a product dependency on the client computer.

You must remove the computer from Managed Mode and remove any dependent point products before the uninstallation option is functional.
  1. Locate the frminst file on the client system. This file should be located in one of the following directories:
    • For a newly installed McAfee Agent 5.x, this file should be located in the following directory:
      C:\Program Files\Mcafee\Agent\
    • For McAfee Agent 4.x or an upgraded McAfee Agent, this file should be located in one of the following two directories:
      C:\Program Files\Mcafee\Common Framework\x86\
      C:\Program Files (x86)\Mcafee\Common Framework\x86\
  2. While logged on as an Administrator, press Windows+R, type cmd, and click OK.
  3. To remove the computer from Managed Mode, run the following command in the CLI command prompt:
    <location of frminst file>\frminst.exe /remove=agent
  4. Remove any McAfee point products such as VirusScan Enterprise or Endpoint Encryption from the client computer.
  5. Optional: Remove the McAfee Framework Service from the client computer through Programs and Features or Apps & features.
Now you can uninstall McAfee Agent through Programs and Features or Apps & features or through the CLI.
