Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.x

Problem

The following error displays when you try to uninstall MA from the Windows Programs and Features Control Panel, or from the command line:

McAfee Agent cannot be removed because other products are still using it

NOTE: This issue can occur when no other McAfee products are installed on the client computer.

Cause

This error occurs when MA is in managed mode.

This behavior is by design, to prevent end users from removing the agent.

MA operates in two modes, managed and unmanaged:
  • Managed mode — MA connects and communicates with ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) to manage McAfee product updates.
  • Unmanaged mode — MA does not connect or communicate with ePO, but pulls updates from McAfee HTTP or FTP servers.

Solution

Remove the computer from managed mode, and remove any dependent managed products before trying to uninstall:
  1. Locate the frminst file on the client computer.

This file is located in one of the following directories:

    • New install of MA 5.x:

      C:\Program Files\Mcafee\Agent\

    • MA 4.8 install, or an upgraded MA version:

      C:\Program Files\Mcafee\Common Framework\x86\
      Or
      C:\Program Files (x86)\Mcafee\Common Framework\x86\

NOTE: MA 4.8 reached End of Life (EOL) for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers on March 31, 2018. For more information, see KB88098.

  2. While logged on as an Administrator:
    1. Press Windows + R.
    2. Type cmd.
    3. Click OK.

  3. Run the following command:

    <location of frminst file>\frminst.exe /remove=agent

  4. Close the command line.
  5. Remove any McAfee managed products such as VirusScan Enterprise or Endpoint Encryption from the client computer.
  6. Optional: Remove the McAfee Framework Service from the client computer, through Programs and Features.
You can now uninstall MA through Windows Programs and Features or from the command line.

NOTE: To manually remove MA only, see KB65863
