McAfee Agent (MA) 5.x

For details of MA supported environments, see KB51573.

You are unable to uninstall McAfee Agent locally from either of the following:
  • Windows Programs and Features Control Panel
  • Command prompt

The following error displays when you try to uninstall MA:
McAfee Agent cannot be removed because other products are still using it

NOTE: This issue can occur when no other McAfee products are installed on the client computer.

This error occurs when MA is in managed mode.

This behavior is by design, to prevent users from removing the agent.

MA operates in two modes:
  • Managed mode — MA connects and communicates with ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) to manage McAfee product updates.
  • Unmanaged mode — MA does not connect or communicate with ePO, but pulls updates from McAfee HTTP servers.

Use ePolicy Orchestrator to remove the McAfee Agent and any other McAfee products from the managed system. See the product documentation for details.

For McAfee product documents, go to the Enterprise Product Documentation portal at https://docs.mcafee.com.

Remove the computer from managed mode, and remove any dependent managed products before you try to uninstall:
  1. Open a command prompt as an administrator
    1. Press the Windows key + R, type regedit into the field and press Enter.
    2. In the Start Search box, type cmd, and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.
    3. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
  2. Navigate to the frminst file on the client computer. The file is located in one of the following folders
    • New install of MA 5.0 and later:

      C:\Program Files\Mcafee\Agent\x86\
    • Upgrade from MA 4.8:
NOTE: MA 4.8 reached End of Life (EOL) for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers on March 31, 2018.
      C:\Program Files\Mcafee\Common Framework\
      C:\Program Files (x86)\Mcafee\Common Framework\x86\
  3. Run the following command:
    frminst.exe /remove=agent
  4. Close the command prompt.
  5. Remove any McAfee managed products such as VirusScan Enterprise or Endpoint Encryption from the client computer.
  6. Optional: Remove the McAfee Framework Service from the client computer, through Programs and Features.
You can now uninstall MA through Windows Programs and Features or from the command line.

NOTE: To manually remove MA only, see KB65863.
