Problem

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.x does not scan USB (Universal Serial Bus) devices upon insertion.

Solution

This is expected behavior. By default, the On-Access Scanner in VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) scans USB devices only when the files on the devices are accessed.

NOTE:  If the USB device contains Autorun or Autoplay files that perform an action when the device is mounted, (for example a read/write to the local system), this action is detected by VSE and a scan is triggered.

To ensure that VSE is configured to scan Autorun or Autoplay content, ensure that both Read/Write and All Files scanning are enabled:
  1. Click Start, Programs, McAfee, VirusScan Console.
  2. Double-click On-Access Scanner.
  3. Click All Processes.
  4. On the Scan Items tab, in the Scan Files section, ensure that When writing to disk and When reading from disk are selected.
  5. In the What to scan section, ensure that All Files is selected.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Close the VirusScan Console.
