Development environments typically spawn short-lived processes hundreds or thousands of times during the build process. Each process performs some work that requires extensive evaluation checks from the Buffer Overflow Protection and Access Protection features of VSE. McAfee recommends that you configure VSE differently to improve overall performance in your development environment:
- Disable Buffer Overflow Protection and Access Protection.
- Configure the on-access scanner to use High Risk and Low Risk scanning profiles. Add heavily used build processes to the Low Risk policy to disable scanning or add exclusions.

- To create low-risk and high-risk process exclusions in VSE, see KB58692.
- For information about why some processes should be added to low-risk exclusions, see KB66036.
