How to prevent users from disabling SiteAdvisor Enterprise from Internet Explorer

Summary

SiteAdvisor Enterprise (SAE) is a browser add-on that can be disabled on a local computer through Internet Explorer (IE) settings. You can use it to prevent a user from disabling only the SAE add-ons and leave other add-ons manageable.

Solution

Use the Microsoft Windows server Group Policy editor to prevent the end user's ability to disable the browser add-ons:
  1. Click Start, Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the left pane, expand Computer ConfigurationAdministrative Templates, Windows Components, Internet Explorer.
  3. In the right pane, right-click Do not allow users to enable or disable add-ons and select Properties.
  4. On the Settings tab, select Enabled, click Apply, and then click OK.
  5. Close the Group Policy Editor.

Solution

To prevent users from disabling SAE plus 3.0 or SAE 3.5 add-ons and leave other add-ons manageable, open Group Policy Management Editor and do the following:
  1. In the left pane, expand Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Security Features\Add-on Management or User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Security Features\Add-on Management.
  2. In the right pane, right-click Add-on List and select Properties.
  3. Click the Settings tab, and then select Enabled.
  4. Click Show. The Show Content prompt displays.
  5. Click Add to specify individual add-ons by using the CLSID:
    NOTE: CLSID must include the braces that enclose the rest of the CLSID.
     
    • CLSID value for McAfee SiteAdvisor BHO is {B164E929-A1B6-4A06-B104-2CD0E90A88FF}
    • CLSID value for McAfee SiteAdvisor Toolbar is {0EBBBE48-BAD4-4B4C-8E5A-516ABECAE064}
       
  6. Enter the name of the item to be added by typing {B164E929-A1B6-4A06-B104-2CD0E90A88FF}
  7. Enter the value of the item to be added by typing 1, and then click OK.
  8. Enter the name of the item to be added by typing {0EBBBE48-BAD4-4B4C-8E5A-516ABECAE064}
  9. Enter the value of the item to be added by typing 1, and then click OK.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Click Apply, and then OK.
  12. Close the Group Policy Editor.
You can also block all extensions in IE other than extensions listed in the Add-on List by enabling group policy option Deny all add-ons unless specifically allowed in the Add-on List.
