VirusScan Command Line 6.x: Summary Report shows unexpected number of total files after scanning archives
Technical Articles ID:   KB69192
Last Modified:  4/7/2017

McAfee VirusScan Command Line Scanner (VCLS) 6.x

When scanning archives with VCLS 6.x, the Total files count does not include the number of files contained in the archive, but is limited to the top-level archive file.

If you scan the example cab file vs_shell.cab, which contains multiple elements, the report will look similar to the following if the /rptall switch is used:

McAfee VirusScan Command Line for Win32 Version:

E:\601cls\vs_shell.cab ... is OK.

Summary Report on E:\601cls\*.cab
 Total files:...................     1
 Clean:.........................     1
 Not Scanned:...................     0
 Possibly Infected:.............     0

Time: 00:03.22

NOTE:  Although the output lists all objects inside the archive scanned, the summary reports Total files = 1, which is the source archive in the last line (in this example,  E:\601cls\vs_shell.cab ).

McAfee will review the summary reporting of total files for the next major product release.

Not counting inside archive files is a change from VCLS 5.x, which counts all the files inside the archive as part of the Total files report in the summary. Any discrepancy in file counts between versions 5.x and 6.x are likely to be caused by the behavioral change in reporting.
