McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8, 8.7i
McAfee SaaS Endpoint Protection 5.2, 5.2.1

When backing up data, such as when using Symantec Backup Program, performance can be as much as two to three times slower than usual. In some cases the server stops responding.

This is generally caused by scanning files that are being opened for backup.

To disable scanning of files opened for backup in VirusScan Enterprise:
  1. Click Start, Programs, McAfee, VirusScan Console.
  2. Double-click On-Access Scanner.
  3. In the left pane, select one of the following:
    • All Processes
    • Default Processes
    • Low-Risk Processes
    • High-Risk Processes
  4. Click the Scan Items tab.
  5. Deselect Scan files opened for Backup.

To disable scanning of files opened for backup in SaaS Endpoint Protection:

CAUTION: This article contains information about opening or modifying the registry.
  • The following information is intended for System Administrators. Registry modifications are irreversible and could cause system failure if done incorrectly.
  • Before proceeding, Intel Security strongly recommends backing up your registry and understanding the restore process. For more information, see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986.
  • Do not run a .REG file that is not confirmed to be a genuine registry import file.

  1. Click Start, Run, type regedit, then click OK
  2. In Registry Editor, locate and select the appropriate key:
    64-bit computers    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\McAfee\SystemCore\vscore\On Access Scanner\McShield\Configuration\Default]
    32-bit computers [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McAfee\SystemCore\vscore\On Access Scanner\McShield\Configuration\Default]

  3. Double-click the DWORD ScanBackupReads and set its Data value to 0. The default value is 1.
  4. Restart your computer or restart McShield.

Alternatively, increment the dwLastModified Data value under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\[Wow6432Node]\McAfee\SystemCore\vscore\On Access Scanner\McShield\Configuration] manually.
