An update failed with error 80004005:Unspecified error

If this occurs, you see the following entry in the Windows Application Event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: GroupShield for Exchange
Event ID: 2053
User:  N/A
Computer: <Exchange Server Name>
Description: An update failed with error 80004005:Unspecified error

Cause

A GroupShield update task is configured to run at the same time as another update task run by an ePO Agent or VirusScan Enterprise.

The default for a GroupShield update task is to run every eight hours on the hour. Therefore, if any other task is initialized and tries to run at same time, GroupShield task might not be able to complete.

As an example, the following extract is from a McAfee Agent Log file when a GroupShield Task is scheduled at the same time (12:00) as an ePO Agent task:

Solution

The error can safely be ignored because any update task (initiated by GroupShield, VSE, or the ePO Agent) will update the other products that are installed to the computer. In this scenario, the update works as a common updater that updates all products.

NOTE: if you are experiencing DAT Retention issues because of this behavior, only the GroupShield task will invoke the PurgeOldDefinitions tool to delete old DATs. Because of this, McAfee recommends that you run at least one regular GroupShield update task on a regular basis. For more information on DAT retention, see KB70445.

You can also change the default update task in GroupShield so that it runs at a specific time when no other task will run (ensure that no other update task for VirusScan Enterprise or the ePO Agent runs at same time as GroupShield update task).
