Summary

Overview of the EWS 5.6 to MEG 7.0 upgrade process
Prerequisites:
  • Confirm you have applied the latest 5.6 Patch release.
  • Download the latest installation image for MEG 7.0 and burn it on a CD.
Upgrade process:
  1. Back up your current EWS 5.6 configuration.
  2. Determine the installation type.
  3. Start installing MEG 7.0.
  4. Select the chosen installation method.
  5. Perform the initial configuration if required.
  6. Import the backed up configuration (this depends on the installation mode that you selected during installation).
  7. Ensure all the settings were migrated.
  8. Apply changes.

Overview of the MEG 7.0 to MEG 7.5 upgrade process
Prerequisites:

  • Confirm you have applied the latest 7.0 Patch release.
  • Download the latest installation image for MEG 7.5 and burn it on a CD.

Upgrade process:

  1. Back up your current MEG 7.0 configuration.
  2. Determine the installation type.
  3. Start the MEG 7.5 installation.
  4. Select the installation method.
  5. Perform the initial configuration if required.
  6. Import the backed up configuration (this depends on the installation mode that you selected during installation).
  7. Ensure all the settings were migrated.
  8. Apply changes.

Solution 1

EWS 5.6 to MEG 7.0 upgrade process
 
Prerequisites:
  • Confirm that you have applied the latest 5.6 Patch release:

    1. Log on to the appliance management console. 
    2. Select About this Appliance
    3. Confirm that you have applied the latest 5.6 Patch. For full patch version information, see KB52060.

      If your appliance has not been upgraded to the latest patch listed, download it from the McAfee Downloads site (www.mcafee.com/us/downloads) and follow the installation instructions in the release notes.

      NOTE:  EWS 5.6 Patch 1 is the minimum requirement for upgrading from EWS 5.6 to MEG 7.0. 

  • Download the latest MEG 7.0 installation image:

    1. Navigate to the McAfee Downloads site (www.mcafee.com/us/downloads) and download the latest MEG 7.0 ISO. 
    2. Burn the MEG 7.0 ISO to a CD.

      NOTE:
       
      Always burn Email and Web Security ISOs at a speed of 4x or slower.
       

Upgrade process

  1. Back up your current configuration:

    1. Log on to the appliance management console. 
    2. Select System, Cluster Management, Backup and Restore Configuration
    3. Select Include TLS certificates and private keys
    4. Click Backup Configuration
    5. Download and save the configuration file to a safe location.

       
  2. Decide which type of installation you want to perform:

    See the Email Gateway 7.0.1 Administrator Guide (PD23524) for information on the available choices (for additional assistance, see the "Frequently Asked Questions" section of the guide).
     
  3. Start the MEG 7.0 installation:

    1. Boot the appliance with the MEG 7.0 CD. 
    2. When the license agreement is presented, type y, and press ENTER to accept and continue with the installation.
       
  4. Select the correct installation method:

    1. You will be presented with 11 options on your screen. At the Enter your Selection prompt, type the option as per your upgrade plan.

      NOTE:  The rest of this article assumes Option a - Perform a complete installation. This option performs a complete installation and erases all data including configuration from the previous version. If you want to upgrade to MEG 7.0 and preserve configuration and email messages, select Option c
       
    2. Press ENTER to continue.  
    3. Type y, and press ENTER to continue. 
    4. Follow prompts to complete the installation.
       
  5. Perform the initial configuration (if required):

    1. After the appliance reboots, you will be prompted to perform the initial configuration of the appliance.
    2. Choose the required language, and click continue.  
    3. Accept the license agreement. 
    4. Select custom setup
    5. If the appliance is managed by ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO), select Import ePO Management and Import the ePO Connection Settings.
    6. Follow the on-screen prompts to import the ePO connection settings. 
    7. Follow the prompts in the configuration wizard to configure additional details such as the IP address, gateway, DNS, and the time and date for the appliance.

      NOTE: When you upgrade to MEG 7.0, the McAfee Email Gateway Appliance Console Port (Web Console) is set to 10443 by default and the default password is password. 
       
    8. When the summary information is displayed, confirm the settings are correct and click Finish. If required, click the back button to modify any information that was entered incorrectly. 
    9. Type a configuration note such as Initial configuration, and click OK
       
  6. Import the backed up configuration (this will depend on the mode of installation that you selected during installation):

    1. Log on to the appliance management console.

      NOTE:  Use https://<applianceipaddress>:10443 to access the appliance management console. For a fresh install (Option a), the default username is admin and the default password is password
       
    2. Select System, System Administration, Configuration Management, Restore Configuration
    3. Click restore from file
    4. Browse to the Email and Web Security 5.6 configuration ZIP file and click OK.
    5. When the configuration is successfully imported, you will be presented with links to view the migration result and configuration report. Click the individual links to confirm the result of the migration, and click Close
       
  7. Ensure all the settings were migrated:

    1. Verify the IP address and gateway information:

      1. Click System, Appliance Management, General
      2. Verify that the hostname, IP address, Domain, and Default gateway were migrated correctly. Correct the information, if required. 
         
         
    2. Verify DNS and routing:

      1. Click System Appliance Management, DNS and Routing
      2. Verify that the DNS servers are listed correctly. Correct the information, if required. 
         
    3. Verify that the custom email policies were migrated:

      1. Click Email, Email Policies
      2. Verify that the custom email scanning policies were migrated correctly. Correct the information, if required. 

         
    4. Verify the user black and white lists:

      1. Click Email, Email Policies, Spam
      2. Click Anti-Spam settings, Blacklists and Whitelists
      3. Verify that the Whitelist and Blacklist entries are correctly migrated. Correct the information, if required.  

         
    5. Verify custom dictionary settings:

      1. Click Email, Email Policies, DLP and Compliance, Compliance Dictionaries
      2. Scroll down the list to verify that your custom dictionaries were imported correctly. Correct if required. 

         
    6. Verify LDAP Settings:

      1. Click Email, Group Management, Directory Services
      2. Verify that the LDAP Settings are migrated as expected. Correct the information, if required. 

         
  8. When you are satisfied that your critical settings are migrated correctly, click Apply Changes

    NOTE: As a best practice, always enter a configuration change comment, for example Imported Configuration

You have now successfully migrated from EWS 5.6 to MEG 7.0, see solution 2 for the 7.0.x to 7.5 upgrade process.

Solution 2

MEG 7.0.x to MEG 7.5 upgrade process

Prerequisites:

  1. Confirm you have applied the latest 7.0 Patch release:

    1. Log on to the appliance management console. 
    2. Select About this Appliance
    3. Confirm that you have applied the latest 7.0 Patch. See article KB52060 for full patch version information.
       
  2. If your appliance has not been upgraded to the latest patch listed, download it from the McAfee Downloads site, and follow the installation instructions in the release notes.

    NOTE:  MEG 7.0 Patch 2 is the minimum requirement for upgrading from MEG 7.0 to MEG 7.5. 
     
  3. Download the latest MEG 7.5 installation image. 
     
  4. Burn the MEG 7.5 ISO to a CD.

    NOTE:
      Always burn EWS ISOs at a speed of 4x or slower.

Upgrade process:

    3. Select Include  Data Loss Prevention database.
    4. Select Include TLS certificates and private keys.
    5. Select Include Secure Web Mail user and system data.
    6. Click Backup Configuration
    7. Download and save the configuration file to a safe location.
