PANIC: LookupHandle: handle out of range, Lotus Notes 8.5.2 SP1 with dual database access
Technical Articles ID:   KB73707
Last Modified:  3/28/2017

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 with/without Patch 1
IBM Lotus Notes 8.5.2 Service Pack 1

For VSE supported environments, see KB51111.

The Lotus Notes client becomes unstable or crashes when two separate users have custom notes.ini files that point to custom databases for each user. No replication or archive task is running.

The standard IBM error pop-up window states that log files are gathered for technical support, and a cmd (shell) window opens to show an error similar to the following:

NCDAEMON.EXE (window title)
Stack base=0x0012E9C8, Stack size = -2820 bytes
PANIC: lookupHandle: handle out of range

The IBM error pop up and the shell window close automatically after a short time. In most cases, Lotus Notes continues to load the database and is usable after the error message window closes.

  • This issue occurs with Lotus Notes 8.5.2 Service Pack 1 and VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.8 or VSE 8.8 Patch 1.
  • On Lotus Notes exit, the Lotus Notes scanner add-on might encounter an out of bounds situation. This causes an access violation that in turn causes the system to stop responding.
  • VSE 8.7i Patch 5 can experience similar issues. See KB73660 for more information.

This issue is resolved in VSE 8.8 Patch 2 which is available from the Product Downloads site.

Patches are cumulative; Technical Support recommends that you install the latest one.

VSE 8.8 Patch 11 is the latest patch available from the Downloads tab on the ServicePortal at https://support.mcafee.com/downloads.

NOTE: VSE 8.8 Patch 11 supports all supported Windows operating systems.

McAfee product software, upgrades, maintenance releases, and documentation are available from the Product Downloads site at: http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/downloads.aspx.

NOTE: You need a valid Grant Number for access. KB56057 provides additional information about the Product Downloads site, and alternate locations for some products.

Edit the notes.ini file on the affected system.
Use Microsoft WordPad or a similar plain text editor to remove the following entries from notes.ini:
