Environment

McAfee SIEM Enterprise Security Manager (ESM) 11.x.x, 10.x.x

For product supported environments, see KB82516.

Problem

You do not know the NGCP password for the ESM.

Solution

IMPORTANT: If non-NGCP users can log on to ESM and collect a settings-only backup, it is possible to pull the ngcp.dfl, Users.blob, and Users.data files from the backup .tgz file. If this option is not possible, continue with the following steps.
  1. Gain access to the ESM using the system rescue CD as outlined in KB74836.
NOTE: Users with user interface access to the ESM can obtain the files with a settings-only backup of the ESM and extract the needed files from the resulting .zip file.
  1. Copy the following files from the /usr/local/ess/data folder on the system and provide to Technical Support:
    • ngcp.dfl
    • Users.blob
    • Users.data
  2. Obtain the exact version of the ESM. At the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter:
cat /etc/buildstamp
  1. Submit the files and version information to Technical Support. Technical Support updates the required files to set the NGCP password to a known default value. The updated files are then emailed back to you.
NOTE: For contact information, see the Related Information section of this article.
  1. When you receive the updated files, copy the two Users.* files back to the /usr/local/ess/data folder by typing the following command and pressing Enter:
cp User* /usr/local/ess/data
  1. Restart the ESM, and allow the database rebuild to complete.
  2. Log on to the ESM user interface using the default password provided in the email from Technical Support.
  3. Click the NGCP user name at the top right of the user interface next to Options, Help, Logout, and change your password. When the password has been changed, it syncs with the operating system root user password.
