How to manually remove McAfee Security Service for Exchange

Summary

If McAfee Security Service for Exchange becomes corrupt and will not uninstall normally, take the following steps to manually remove the product.

Solution

Steps to uninstall McAfee Security Service for Exchange manually:
  1. Stop the McAfee services:
  1. Click Start, Run, type services.msc, and click OK.
  2. Right-click each of the following services, and click Stop:

    1. McAfee Framework Service
    2. McAfee NOC Reporting and Licensing Service
    3. McAfee Security Service for Exchange
    4. McAfee Virus and Spyware Protection Service
    5. McAfee Anti-Spam Rules Updater
       
  3. Close the Services window.
  1. Terminate the McAfee processes:
  1. Click Start, Run, type taskmgr, and click OK.
  2. In the Image Name column, highlight the processes listed below.
  3. For each process, click End Process and click Yes to the confirmation dialog.

    1. Framework Service.exe
    2. naPrdMgr.exe
    3. SafeService.exe
    4. RpcServ.exe
    5. Postmaster.exe
    6. MaesRulesUpdater.exe
       
  4. Close the Task Manager.
  1. Modify the registry:
  1. Click Start, Run, type regedit, and click OK.
  2. Right-click each of the registry keys below and click Delete. When prompted if you are sure you want to delete, click Yes.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\MsExchange\ISVirusScan]

    The following three entries will only be found on 32-bit installations:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\McAfee\McAfee\Security Service for Exchange]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Network Associates\ePolicy Orchestrator\Application Plugins\GROUPSHD7000]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall{910412B5-D939-49B6-90E8-BB4DDA24C894}]

    The following three entries will only be found on 64-bit installations:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow64\32Node\McAfee\McAfee Security Service for Exchange][HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\WOW6432\Node\Network Associates\ePolicy Orchestrator\Application Plugins\GROUPSHD7000] 
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\WOW6432\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{910412B5-D939-49B6-90E8-BB4DDA24C894}]
     

    NOTE: Apply the same steps above if your registry contains ControlSet003 or above.
     
  3. Close the registry editor. 
  1.  Remove the McAfee Transport sink/agent from Exchange 2003 and 2007/2010:
  1. Click Start, All Programs, Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Exchange Management Shell.
  2. Copy and paste, or type the following command into the Exchange Command Shell to uninstall the McAfeeTxAgent, and press ENTER:

    IMPORTANT:
    Commands in the Exchange Command Shell must be entered exactly as they appear here (including quotation marks) for the commands to execute successfully.

    uninstall-transportagent -Identity "McAfeeTxAgent"

  3. When prompted to confirm the deletion, press Y.
  4. Copy and paste, or type the following command into the Exchange Command Shell, and press ENTER: 

    uninstall-transportagent -Identity "McAfeeTxRoutingAgent"

  5. When prompted to confirm the deletion, press Y.
  6. To close the Management Shell, type exit, and press ENTER.
  1. Delete the McAfee Security Service for Exchange folder:
  1. Right-click My Computer and browse to \Program Files\McAfee. (On 64-bit systems, browse to Program Files (x86)\McAfee).
  2. Right-click the McAfee Security Service for Exchange folder and click Delete. When prompted for confirmation, click Yes

    NOTE: If the folder is deleted successfully, go to step 6. If the folder cannot be deleted (for example, if it's reported as "in use"), stop the postmaster.exe process as follows:
     
  3. Click Start, Run, type taskmgr, and click OK.
  4. In the Image Name column, highlight postmaster.exe.
  5. Click End Process and click Yes to the confirmation dialog.
  6. Close Task Manager and delete the McAfee Security Service for Exchange folder.

If you are still unable to delete the McAfee Security Service for Exchange folder, delete it after you restart the Exchange server.

  1. Remove the McAfee Security Service for Exchange icons from the Start menu and desktop:
  1. Click Start, All Programs, McAfee.
  2. Right-click McAfee Security Service for Exchange and click Delete. When prompted if you want to continue, click Yes.
  3. On the Desktop, right-click the McAfee Security Service for Exchange shortcut and click Delete. When prompted if you want to continue, click Delete Shortcut.
  1. Restart the Exchange server.
    When you have completed all the previous steps, restart the Exchange server. If you cannot delete the McAfee Security Service for Exchange folder, do the following after the Exchange server restarts: 
  1. Click Start, Run, type services.msc, and click OK.
  2. Right-click the McAfee Framework Service and click Stop.
  3. Right-click My Computer and browse to \Program Files\McAfee.
  4. Right-click the McAfee Security Service for Exchange folder and click Delete. When prompted for confirmation, click Yes.
  5. In the Services window, right-click the McAfee Framework Service and click Start.
  6. Close the Services window.
  7. Restart the server after completing the above steps.
