Remote ePolicy Orchestrator Agent Handler fails to connect to the database after changing the database credentials
Technical Articles ID:   KB75333
Last Modified:  6/11/2019

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) 5.x

After you change the credentials used for accessing the ePO database, the credentials fail to update on the remote ePO Agent Handler.

The Server.log on the remote Agent Handler displays the following:
E #3936 COM Error :80040e4d in DAL2_CConnection::GetConnection
E #3936 Meaning = IDispatch error #3149
E #3936& Source = Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
E #3936& Description = Login failed for user '<username>'.

The database connection information (such as the SQL Server name or port) has changed and Agent Handlers can no longer connect to the ePO database.

Modify the remote Agent Handler settings:
  1. On the Agent Handler server system, find the Agent Handler folder you extracted from the ePO software installation package.
  2. Double-click Setup.exe. The Agent Handler InstallShield wizard runs.
  3. Click Next.
  4. On the Program Maintenance dialog box, click Modify.
  5. Configure the following settings:
    1. Type the computer name of the ePO server with which the Agent Handler must communicate.
    2. Specify which port to use for Agent Handler-to-server communication. The default port is 8444.

NOTE: Using the default port enables Agent Handler-to-server communication to be performed using only port 8444. You can optionally specify port 8443, the Console-to-application server communication port, but doing so requires that port 8444 remains available for Agent Handler communication.
    3. Type the ePO Admin User name and ePO Admin Password of a user with global administrator rights.
    4. Click Next to use the ePO Admin credentials to access the database.

NOTE: The credentials you use must be assigned the appropriate SQL Server role and permissions.
  6. Configure the credentials to access the database as follows, and then click Next:
    • Database Server with instance name (Example: DB-SERVER\SERVERNAME)
    • Authentication type
    • Domain name where the restored database server is hosted
    • User name and Password
    • Database name, if not provided automatically
  7. Click Install.
  8. After installation completes, enable your remote Agent Handler from within the ePO interface.
To learn more about Remote Agent Handlers, see the "Agent Handlers" section of the ePolicy Orchestrator 5.3.0 Product Guide (PD25504).

Use Programs and Features (or Add/Remove Programs) to modify the installation:

NOTE: These instructions are written for Microsoft Windows 2012 R2. The exact steps can vary slightly for different operating systems.
  1. Log on to the Agent Handler with administrator rights.
NOTE: If a domain administrator account does not work, use the local Administrator account
  1. Access Programs and Features (or Add/Remove Programs, depending on your operating system).
  2. Select McAfee Agent Handler from the list of programs.
  3. Click Change.
  4. In the install wizard, click Next and Next again.
  5. Enter a user name and password for the ePO console that has global Administrator permissions.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Enter the user name and password for the ePO database.
  8. Click Next, then click Install.
The password that the Agent Handler uses to access the ePO database is now reset.
