There are some key considerations when you install or deploy VSE 8.x using a third-party deployment application:
- If you deploy VSE using Windows Active Directory Group Policies, which installs using msiexec.exe, you must first remove any existing antivirus (AV) products before you install VSE. This requirement also applies to earlier releases of VSE.
- You lose functionality when you use a third-party application to install the VSE MSI package. When you use SetupVSE.exe to install VSE, it runs checks and calls any relevant uninstall routines for other products before installing VSE. For a list of products that can be removed when VSE is installed, see KB72251.
- The MSI package does not verify or remove any existing AV products. It can lead to:
- A broken installation.
- The system that has multiple installations of AV, not just McAfee AV.
- Multiple product driver conflicts can then exist, leading to system crashes, performance issues, or scan issues.
IMPORTANT: VSE 8.8
Patch 8 and later include constraints to prevent the execution of the .MSI or .MSP packages to install or upgrade VSE. The packages can't perform prerequisite checks to block installation on incompatible environments.
Customers on versions of VSE before VSE 8.8
Patch 8, are advised not to use the MSI package for the same reasons it was removed in VSE 8.8
Patch 8.
The following is extracted from the
VSE 8.8 Patch 8 release notes:
The use of .MSI or .MSP to start VirusScan Enterprise is now blocked and produces this error message: "You must use SETUPVSE.EXE or SETUP.EXE to start VirusScan Enterprise installation"
NOTES: For VSE 8.8
Patch 7 and earlier only, there are no issues when you use the MSI package:
- At the command line to repair or reinstall. For further details about using msiexec.exe, see the VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 Product Guide.
- To remove VSE. For instructions to manually remove VSE 8.x using msiexec.exe, see KB52648.
