Peer has shutdown the connection ('sadmin config export' and 'sadmin config import' commands fail)
Technical Articles ID:   KB77208

Environment

McAfee Application Control (MAC) 6.1.0
McAfee Change Control (MCC) 6.1.0

Problem

When you attempt an import or export with the sadmin config export <file> or sadmin config import <file> commands, the operation fails with the following error:

Peer has shutdown the connection.

The issue occurs with standalone deployments of McAfee Application Control and McAfee Change Control 6.1.0.

Cause

When you run a standalone deployment, the CriticalProcList registry key is not created.

This key is required by the sadmin config command and causes the sadmin config Export\Import command to fail, because the registry value is defined as NULL if it is not present.

Solution

This issue is resolved in MAC/MCC 6.1.0-671 (or later), which is available from the McAfee Downloads site at: http://mcafee.com/us/downloads/downloads.aspx. For instructions on how to download patches, see KB56057.

Workaround

CAUTION: This article contains information about opening or modifying the registry.

  • The following information is intended for System Administrators. Registry modifications are irreversible and could cause system failure if done incorrectly.
  • Before proceeding, Technical Support strongly recommends that you back up your registry and understand the restore process. For more information, see: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256986.
  • Do not run a REG file that is not confirmed to be a genuine registry import file.

Perform the following steps on the standalone system:

  1. Click Start, Run, type regedit, and click OK.
  2. Navigate to the following registry location:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\swin\parameters\]

  3. Create a new registry string (reg_sz ) value, name it CriticalProcList, and leave the Value data blank.
  4. Run the sadmin config export <file> or sadmin config import <file> again as needed.
