The following are observed after you install VSE 8.8
Patch 3 or later releases on Windows 8 or Windows 2012.
- Windows Defender Service is in the stopped state and the service properties show:
- Service Name: WinDefend
- Display Name: Windows Defender Service
- Startup Type: Disabled
- Service status: Running
- Any attempt to start the Defender service from the Services window results in the following Windows error:
The Windows Defender service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs.
- Any attempt to start Windows Defender from the Console results in the following error:
Windows Defender has been turned off and isn't monitoring your computer.
If you are using another app to check for malicious or unwanted software use Action Center to check that app's status.
- The Security Center shows the following:
- Spyware and unwanted software protection (important ) - Windows Defender is turned off
- Virus protection (Important) - Windows Defender is turned off

Support for Windows 8
VirusScan Enterprise Patch 3 no longer disables Microsoft Windows Defender during installation to Windows 8 and Server 2012 systems.
Windows Defender is turned back on when VSE 8.8 Patch 3 has been uninstalled.
