cmd.exe fails to run with VMware ViewAgent installed on systems with Application Control or Change Control
Technical Articles ID:   KB79345
Last Modified:  1/11/2017

Environment

McAfee Application Control (MAC) 6.1, 6.0
McAfee Change Control (MCC) 6.1, 6.0

VMware ViewAgent

Problem

When you attempt to open a command prompt on a system with MAC / MCC and VMware ViewAgent installed, cmd.exe may crash. The problem can occur if the Script as Updater (SAU) or self-approval feature is enabled.

Solution

This issue is resolved in MAC / MCC 6.1.2.

McAfee product software, upgrades, maintenance releases, and documentation are available from the Product Downloads site at: http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/downloads.aspx.

NOTE: You need a valid Grant Number for access. KB56057 provides additional information about the Product Downloads site, and alternate locations for some products.

Workaround

Remove the entry for VMware ViewAgent from the BootExecute registry key.
  1. Click Start, Run, type regedit, and click OK.
  2. Navigate to the following location and remove the entry for VMware ViewAgent:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute]
