Performance improvement tips:

VSE Component	Performance Improvement Tips
On-Demand Scanner	Disable archive scanning. Set the Performance threshold to Below Normal or Low. Run on a weekly schedule.
On-Access Scanner	Disable the Processes on Enable option. For details about this option, see KB76157. From the default profile, enable the Scan when Reading from Disk option. Do not ignore scan timeout events. To learn more about overcoming them, see KB52441. Use the High/Low/Default profiles to reduce the risk of adding exclusions. To learn how to make On Access Scanner (real-time) exclusions more secure, see KB79589. Use the High/Low/Default profiles for heavy disk I/O applications.
Email Scanner	Turning on Cached Exchange Mode improves the amount of time the initial pause occurs (see the notes below for further details about this pause). To prevent access to the email, Outlook is intentionally Paused while both the message attachments and body are downloaded locally and scanned. After scanning, the Outlook client will download the message attachments and body again for the user. To enable Cached Exchange Mode, see https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Turn-on-Cached-Exchange-Mode-7885af08-9a60-4ec3-850a-e221c1ed0c1c Expected behavior of the VSE Outlook Email Scanner: Turn off the Heuristic network check for suspicious files. For steps to access the On Delivery Email Scan Policies policy, see KB70130. Disabling the GTI lookup can improve performance if there is slow GTI or failed lookups. For details, see KB75933. Also, address network issue resulting in slow or failed GTI lookups. Disable this feature if the mail server is already protected. For details, see KB69030. NOTE: Review a related issue where Outlook stops responding, or has performance issues, after VSE 8.8 mail scan plug-in is loaded. Improvements have been made in VSE 8.8 Patch 4 and 10. Script Scanner	Enable this option only for workstations, and not for servers. Add URL exclusions for trusted websites.
Exclusions	To configure VSE for use with backup software, see the following: Exclusions for Symantec Backup Exec, see KB68701. When you configure servers and server applications: Use exclusions as recommended by the vendor. Make the exclusions recommended by the vendor safer. To learn how to make On Access Scanner (real-time) exclusions more secure, see KB79589. Exclude potentially unwanted programs. For information about excluding them, see KB50383. Use wildcards in your exclusions. For how to use wildcards when creating exclusions in VSE, see KB54812. NOTE: It is not possible to share on-access and on-demand exclusions.
