Summary

The EpeWinUpgradeTool utility is a Windows Command Line tool used to inject McAfee Drive Encryption files, drivers, and registry entries into a WIM file. This process creates a customized WinPE image that contains McAfee DETech recovery software. Using this utility requires the user to have strong knowledge of Microsoft Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit Version 4.0 or later. This article, which is linked from the DETech 7.1 Guide (PD24871), explains how to use the attached tool to simplify the creation of WinPE 3.x recovery media by automating the process.

The attached tools (DETech64bit.zip and DETech32bit.zip) enable file injection and the addition of registry items to the WinPE image.

The attached tools can be used for two purposes:
  • To use the EpeWinUpgrade tool for creating WinPE 3.x (and higher) CD media.
  • To perform an Operating System (OS) Refresh using standard Microsoft Tools. For details of how to use this tool for the OS Refresh process, see KB79908.

Unmount the WIM, update WIM if "save"
-ForceMbr <filename> [frequency=<Hz>]
Restore MBR from file continuously

IMPORTANT: These tools require command-line switches to launch them. The switches you use depends on the purpose you intend to use the tool for. If you attempt to run the executable without any switches, it causes the application to display the following message followed by a list of the available switches:

Solution

How to use the tools for automated creation of WinPE 3.x (and later):
  1. Download the required package for the Win PE version you want to build (32-bit or 64-bit).
  2. Extract the WinZip archive file to a local folder. Example: C:\EpeWinUpgradeTool.
  3. Open a command prompt to the extracted folder.
  4. To inject the DETech drivers and registry entries, use the following commands from the prompt:

    For non-Opal systems
    Run the command: EpeWinUpgradeTool –Inject <Files dir> <image>

    For Opal systems
    Run the command: EpeWinUpgradeTool –InjectOpal <Files dir> <image>

    where:
     <Files dir> is the file folder within the EpeWinugradeTool folder.
     <image> is the full path to the WIM image to modify.
     
  5. To copy the DETech files, use the following at the command prompt:

    Command line syntax:  EpeWinUpgradeTool –Copyfiles <file list> <src dir> <dst dir> <image>

    where:
    <file list> is a Unicode (UTF16) text file containing formatted: src_filepath=dst_filepath.
    <src dir> is the path to copy the files from. Example C:\EpeWinUpgradeTool\FileList.
    <dst dir> is the path to copy the files to within the WIM image.
    <image> is the full path to the WIM image to modify.

    Examples:

    For non-Opal systems
    EpeWinUpgradeTool –Copyfiles C:\EpeWinUpgradeTool\FileLists\EETech64Files.txt C:\EpeWinUpgradeTool\Files C:\WIM.wim\Files C:\WIM.wim

    For Opal systems
    EpeWinUpgradeTool –Copyfiles C:\EpeWinUpgradeTool\FileLists\EETechOpal64Files.txt C:\EpeWinUpgradeTool\Files C:\WIM.wim\Files C:\WIM.wim

     
  6. After the Win PE WIM image has been created, convert it to a bootable ISO image.
