Environment

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.8 Patch 4

For details of VSE 8.x supported environments, see KB51111.

Summary

A number of customers have reported this issue on server class systems that fail at unpredictable times. The issue has been reported to occur when VSE is performing a lot of scan activity (file activities).

The server class systems include a build server for a development environment and Citrix servers, because they provide files to numerous users concurrently. The risk of experiencing the failure is undetermined, but is higher for busier systems.

Problem

Random Bugcheck 50 system crash (blue screen) on server class systems.

The stack of the crashing thread indicates a call to nt!PsGetProcessId prior to failing.

System Change

Either of the following products that use the driver version 15.1.0.656 were installed:
  • VSE 8.8 Patch 4
  • Host Intrusion Prevention 8.0 Patch 4

Cause

A data structure used for scanning is able to be updated by multiple threads, without having the requisite guards in place to guarantee the state of the data. The failure occurs when a thread uses the data and the content is unexpected.

Solution

This issue was resolved in VSE 8.8 patch 5.

Issue resolutions in updates and major releases are cumulative; Technical Support recommends that you install the latest version. To find the most recent release for your product, visit the Product Downloads site at http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/downloads.aspx.
