Technical Articles ID:   KB86363
Last Modified:  8/2/2017

Environment

McAfee Drive Encryption (DE) 7.1.x

HP Spectre x360 convertible

For details of DE 7.1.x supported environments, see KB79422.

Problem

DE fails to activate after installation on HP Spectre x360 convertible systems.

NOTE: HP Spectre x360 convertible is verified to be Windows 8.1 certified as stated at https://sysdev.microsoft.com/en.

The issue has been reported on systems in Legacy BIOS mode or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) mode.

Client side shows:
The user will see the following information in the Encryption System Status window, even though the encryption policy was activated in ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO):

 System State
Inactive
 Volume Status
No volume information
 Progress
Progress bar shows no encryption activity

ePO Console shows:
The administrator will see the Client System Details showing for Drive Encryption:

State
In-Active

Clicking on More, Disks will show the following message:

No details available, as Drive Encryption is not Active

Problem

MfeEpe.log on the client records one or both of the following errors:

Early activation error: [0xEE850002] Error writing firmware environment variable CompatibilityFlags: 5

userHandler: failed to process batched user data response: [0xEE850002] [0xEE850002] Error writing firmware environment variable CompatibilityFlags: 5

Cause

Fast Boot is enabled but is not supported. To review the product management which covers support for Windows 8 Fast Boot, see KB77144.

Solution

Access the BIOS and disable the Fast Boot UEFI option. With Fast Boot disabled, the UEFI Protocols are loaded correctly.
