Could not validate filename OR filename is invalid (file operations in Application and Change Control fail if the file path length exceeds 256 characters)
Technical Articles ID:   KB86476
Last Modified:  7/1/2016

Environment

McAfee Application Control (MAC) 6.2.x
McAfee Change Control (MCC) 6.2.x
Microsoft Windows (all supported versions)

Problem

File operations fail with the following error reported in the product log file:

Could not validate filename OR filename is invalid: <file path>

NOTE: This issue occurs for both network and local paths.

Cause

This issue occurs when the file path length contains more than 256 characters.

Solution

This issue is resolved in MAC/MCC 7.0.0-666 and is included in all subsequent 7.x releases.

IMPORTANT:  After you install or upgrade to MAC/MCC 7.0.0-666, you must perform the following to skip file path length validation:
  • For standalone deployments, run the following command from the CLI:

    sadmin config set skipvalidatefilelength=1

  • For ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) managed deployments, create a run command client task with the argument 'config set skipvalidatefilelength=1' and push the task to clients.
McAfee product software, upgrades, maintenance releases, and documentation are available from the Product Downloads site at: http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/downloads.aspx.

NOTE: You need a valid Grant Number for access. KB56057 provides additional information about the Product Downloads site, and alternate locations for some products.

Solution

This issue is resolved in MAC/MCC 6.2.0-530 and is included in all subsequent 6.2.0 releases.

NOTE: This release sets skipvalidatefilelength to 1 by default.

Workaround

If you observe the issue over a network path, disable the network-tracking feature:

NOTE: Disabling network-tracking requires a system restart.
  • For standalone deployments, run the following command from the CLI:

    sadmin features disable network-tracking

  • For ePO managed deployments, create a run command client task with the argument features disable network-tracking and push the task to clients.
