Environment

Database Activity Monitoring (DAM) standalone 4.x

Problem

The Database Security Server slows down in the response time of both the console and the processing of sensor activity.

Cause

The Database Security Server back-end database might slowly grow with unnecessary rows because of how the back-end database saves rules. This growth affects the rule_actions_group table and related referenced tables.

Over time, this table growth can affect server response time in both the console and the processing of sensor activity.

To determine the severity of the issue, run the following query against the back-end database:

select count(id) from rule_actions_group where id not in (select action_group_id from rules_for_dbs union select group_id from va_scan);

If the result is larger than 1000, we recommend that you follow the steps in the solution below.

Solution

To resolve this issue:

Upgrade to Database Security 4.6.0 or later.
Add the run.clean.unused.rule.actions.group=true parameter:
1. Stop the McAfee Database Security Server service.
2. Navigate to <McAfee Database Security Installation Directory>\conf\.
3. Open the server-custom.properties file in a text editor of your choice.
4. Add the advanced parameter run.clean.unused.rule.actions.group=true on its own line.
5. Save your change.
6. Start the McAfee Database Security Server service.

Or, use the attached SQL script to clean the unnecessary rows from the affected tables.

IMPORTANT:

You might have to run these scripts regularly, so we recommend that you perform the above procedure.
Make sure that you use the proper script for the back-end DBMS type: Oracle or MSSQL.
