On-Screen Keyboard fails during preboot authentication on a Hewlett Packard Elite x2 1012 G1

Environment

McAfee Drive Encryption (DE) 7.1.x

Hewlett Packard (HP) Elite x2 1012 G1 (BIOS Mode UEFI)
Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (UK version)

Problem

The On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) does not accept any input on a HP Elite x2 1012 G1 when the BIOS Mode is configured to use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI).

After you install and activate DE 7.1, you cannot authenticate at the preboot authentication screen if you use the OSK.

NOTE: The system passed the UEFI tests to verify the tablet responds to the touch interface as outlined in KB78050.

Cause

The Fast Boot option is enabled in the BIOS (this option speeds up the boot time), but also disables certain protocols and drivers that are required for preboot to function.

NOTE: Fast Boot was previously known as hybrid boot.

Solution

Access the BIOS and disable the Fast Boot UEFI option. With Fast Boot disabled, the UEFI Protocols are loaded correctly.
