Environment

McAfee Endpoint Security for Mac (ENSM) Firewall 10.2.0 and earlier
McAfee ENSM Threat Prevention 10.2.0 and earlier
McAfee ENSM Web Control 10.2.0 and earlier

macOS Sierra 10.12

Problem

After you upgrade the Mac operating system to Sierra (10.12), ENSM no longer functions. You are also unable to remove ENSM via a deployment task or using the command line.

Cause

ENSM 10.2.0 (and earlier) does not support macOS Sierra 10.12.

Solution

Try this solution first.
  1. Open a Terminal window.
  2. Invoke the uninstallation command from the Terminal:

Module to remove Command to use
    All modules  sudo /usr/local/McAfee/uninstall EPM
    Firewall module sudo /usr/local/McAfee/uninstall Firewall
Threat Prevention module sudo /usr/local/McAfee/uninstall ThreatPrevention
Web Control module sudo /usr/local/McAfee/uninstall WebControl

NOTE: The uninstallation command is case sensitive.

  3. Type the administrator password set by the ePolicy Orchestrator server administrator when prompted. You are prompted for a password if the Uninstallation option Require password to uninstall the client is enabled in the Endpoint Security Common policy.
If you are still unable to remove ENSM, perform Solution 2.

Solution

If you are unable to remove ENSM using Solution 1, perform the following steps to manually remove ENSM and then reinstall.
  1. Boot the Mac system into Safe Mode:
    1. Ensure that the system is shut down and not 'sleeping'.
    2. Press the power button.
    3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the SHIFT key.

NOTE: Press and hold the SHIFT key as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.

    4. Release the SHIFT key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress bar.

  2. Manually remove ENSM. In Safe Mode, type the following commands and press ENTER after each:

    sudo su

NOTE: When prompted, type the administrator password.

    cd /usr/local/
    rm –rf McAfee/
    cd /Library/Application\ Support/
    rm –rf McAfee/
    cd /Library/LaunchDaemons/
    rm –rf com.mcafee.*
    cd /Library/LaunchAgents/
    rm –rf com.mcafee.*
    cd /Library/Preferences/
    rm –rf com.mcafee.*

  3. When the removal process is complete, reboot the system and confirm that it starts normally.
Now you can download and install ENSM 10.2.1 (or later), which fully supports macOS Sierra 10.12.
