McAfee Validation Trust Protection service is not started and the On-Access Scanner is disabled

Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.x
McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.8 Patch 1–9

Problem

After you install MA 5.x followed by VSE, the McAfee Validation Trust Protection service does not run, and the On-Access Scanner (OAS) is disabled.

Cause

The McAfee Validation Trust Protection service is set to start automatically when VSE is installed, but, it is not if MA 5.x is installed before VSE. In this case, the Start value of the service is set to 3 (Manual) rather than 2 (Automatic).

If the McAfee Validation Trust Protection service is not started programmatically by other McAfee modules, it does not run. If this service is not running, the McAfee McShield service will also not start, which causes the On-Access Scanner to be disabled.

Solution

With VSE 8.8 Patch 10 and later, on systems where the Start value of the service is set to 3 (Manual), it is automatically changed to 2 (Automatic).
