VirusScan Enterprise command line switch REMOVE = EmailScan is ignored on Windows 7 (32-bit) systems
Technical Articles ID:   KB88834
Last Modified:  3/2/2017

Environment

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.8 (all patched versions)

Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

Problem

You are unable to use the command line to install VSE 8.8 without the Outlook email scan component or modify an existing VSE 8.8 installation to remove it on Windows 7 (32-bit) systems.

The following command line switch is ignored on Windows 7 (32-bit):

SetupVSE.exe  ADDLOCAL=ALL REMOVE=EmailScan

NOTE: The same command line option is honored on 64-bit Windows 7 systems.

Cause

On 32-bit Windows 7 systems, both Outlook and Lotus Notes email components are supported, and the two applications share a common registry key. When VSE attempts to remove the Outlook email scan component via the REMOVE=EmailScan switch, it fails as both Outlook (EmailScan) and Lotus (LotusNotesScan) references exist.

NOTE: On Windows 7 (64-bit) systems, Lotus Notes is no longer supported, and the REMOVE=EmailScan command is successful because the registry key is no longer shared with Lotus Notes.

Solution

To remove the email scan feature on Windows 7 (32-bit), you must remove both EmailScan and LotusNotesScan. Use the following command to successfully remove the EmailScan component:

SetupVSE.exe  ADDLOCAL=ALL REMOVE=EmailScan,LotusNotesScan
