Console Application is Invalid Launch aborted (when starting the File and Removable Media Protection console on the client)

McAfee File and Removable Media Protection (FRP) 5.0.2 (build

You are unable to start the FRP console from the McAfee notification area icon after March 4, 2017.

You see the following error after you click the McAfee tray icon and select Manage Features, File and Removable Media Protection:

Console Application is Invalid Launch aborted

System Change

You installed FRP (General Availability (GA))

When you access the FRP Console from the notification area, the tray application performs a validity check. This validity check involves checking that the underlying files that display product information are signed correctly and that the signatures of those files have not expired. The error “Console Application is Invalid Launch aborted” occurs because the file MfeFFConsole.exe lacks a time stamp entry. Because the file lacks a time stamp, the tray application checks the date of the signing certificate, which expired on 04/03/2017 (UK date order).

Under normal operations, the file would be deemed valid if it had a time stamp, even if the signing certificate has expired.

If you run MfeFFConsole.exe manually from the FRP Prom files directory, it does not pass through the tray application validity checks and successfully starts the FRP console.

This issue is first resolved in FRP 5.0.2 Repost (build which is no longer available.

Currently FRP 5.0.8 is the latest release available on the Product Downloads site and ePO Software Manager.

To determine what the latest release is, see KB81149.

McAfee product software, upgrades, maintenance releases, and documentation are available from the Product Downloads site at: http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/downloads.aspx.

NOTE: You need a valid Grant Number for access. KB56057 provides additional information about the Product Downloads site, and alternate locations for some products.

Perform the following steps if you are unable to perform a full upgrade:

NOTE: A system restart is not required for this procedure.
  1. Download the attached file (MfeFfConsole_fix.zip).
  2. Extract the contents to a temporary folder.
  3. Copy the file MfeFFConsole.exe directly to the folder:

%ProgramFiles%\McAfee\Endpoint Encryption For Files and Folders\.
  4. Confirm that you want to overwrite the existing file.
  5. Open the FRP console from the notification area.

You can also use an ePO Endpoint Deployment Kit (EDK) to perform the installation. This method is useful if you do not want to upgrade the entire FRP client.
  1. Download the MFEFFCON1000.zip file from this article.
  2. Log on to the ePO console and check in the package to the Current branch of the ePO Master Repository.
  3. Use an ePO deployment task to deploy the FRP package to the systems with the issue.

Start MfeFFConsole.exe directly through Windows Explorer.

The executable is located in: %ProgramFiles%\McAfee\Endpoint Encryption For Files and Folders\MfeFfConsole.exe.
