The Tomcat service stops working when running old Active Directory sync tasks
Technical Articles ID:   KB89093
Last Modified:  7/10/2018

Environment

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) 5.1.0 - 5.1.3, 5.3.0 - 5.3.3

Problem

The ePO Application Server Service (Tomcat) stops working intermittently during the execution of an Active Directory synchronization task created on a previous version of ePO.

Enabling orion debug logging shows that the deprecated "EPOMultiPointADServices" call is in use. For instructions to enable debug logging and log size for Orion.log, see KB52369.

If you cannot find the following within the debug log, it is not the same problem:

2017-02-17 07:17:24,160 INFO [scheduler-TaskQueueEngine-thread-1] command.SyncDomainADCommand - Syncing 1 groups
2017-02-17 07:17:24,192 DEBUG [scheduler-TaskQueueEngine-thread-1] services.EPOMultiPointADServices - Connecting to AD

System Change

Upgraded to ePO 5.1.x or ePO 5.3.x.

Cause

The older Active Directory sync task calls outdated, deprecated code that should no longer be in use.

Newly created AD sync tasks no longer call this code, preventing the task failure.

Solution

Recreate the Active Directory sync task, disabling and/or deleting the old, deprecated task. To learn more about creating Active Directory tasks, see the "Managing your network security" section beginning on page 101 in the ePolicy Orchestrator Product Guide (PD25504).
