How to create a custom theme for the Drive Encryption preboot environment
Technical Articles ID:   KB89686
Last Modified:  9/5/2017

McAfee Drive Encryption (DE) 7.x

For details of DE supported environments, see KB79422.

Technical Support does not provide assistance with custom theme creation or modifications to existing McAfee themes. Customers who develop their own themes assume all responsibility for troubleshooting and modifications. Also, themes that are used by McAfee Sales Engineers, which have not gone through Product Management approval for customer release, are not supported. To review the support statement, see KB68874.

However, there is a DE menu option pertaining to custom themes that is not documented anywhere ("Regenerate missing Theme Package"), which must be used for the custom theme to be applied to the client. For this reason, this article has been created to assist customers who incur issues deploying a custom theme.

IMPORTANT: The DE Best Practices Guide (PD24868) recommends that you leave the default options on the Theme tab for easier deployment and management. Only after a successful deployment of the default theme, should you change to using a custom theme.

Custom theme requirements:
  • An image with dimensions 1024 x 768
  • File format is .PNG.
  • PNG file size does not exceed 2.5 MB.

Create a custom theme:
  1. Log on to the ePO console.
  2. Click Menu, Configuration, Server Settings.
  3. On the Setting Categories pane, click Drive Encryption, then click Manage Themes to open the Drive Encryption Theme page.
  4. Click Actions, Add.
  5. Type a theme name in the Name field, then select Create a new theme based on an existing theme option.
  6. Select a theme from the Based on drop-down list.
  7. Browse to the Background Image, then click OK. This creates the new theme package in:

    C:\Program Files\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\DB\Software\Current\EETHEME\DAT\0000 folder.

NOTE: You can also browse and install a theme package using the Select Theme package to install option.
  8. Generate the custom theme package:
    1. click Menu, Configuration, Server Settings, Endpoint Encryption, Manage Themes.
    2. Click Actions, Regenerate Missing Theme Package.
  9. Download the custom themes on the client using one of these methods:
    • In ePolicy Orchestrator, use the Update Now option under Menu, Systems, System Tree, Actions, Agent.
    •  Product Update task
    • Update Security from the client
  10. Restart the client.
  • All themes have a unique ID. When an ePO Server Update task is run, the theme IDs are verified against the existing theme IDs on the client, then the new theme is downloaded to the client if it has changed.
  • For further assistance with creating a theme, refer to the DE 7.2.0 Product Guide (PD26653).

  • This package can be verified in the Master Repository. The Theme package Check in Date would match the time when you have regenerated the Theme Package.
  • This package is listed as McAfee Drive Encryption Themes and the Package Type is DAT.
  • Once the client has been updated verify the client task is updating in the McAfee Agent Status Monitor and the new theme shows up in:

    C:\Program Files\McAfee\Endpoint Encryption Agent\Repository\Themes
  • Verify in the mfeepe.log that the theme handler detects a theme ID change and if there are any error with the theme handler unzipping the theme file.
  • Verify that the Background.png file is the background of the selected theme located in C:\Program Files\McAfee\Endpoint Encryption\Theme.
