A small number of Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 systems become unresponsive during a system startup and after applying a Windows update.

The issue is random and affects a limited number of systems. For example, only 80 systems would see the problem out of 18,000 that applied the Windows Update.


A thread in the process Wininit.exe becomes blocked while waiting on a validation attempt in McAfee Validation Trust (VTP). Wininit.exe is locked because it is the same resource needed by VTP for the verification, which leads to a deadlock on Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 systems.


This issue is resolved in VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 Update 10, which is available from the Product Downloads site at: http://mcafee.com/us/downloads/downloads.aspx.

NOTE: You need a valid Grant Number for access. KB56057 provides additional information about the Product Downloads site, and alternate locations for some products.

Updates are cumulative; Technical Support recommends that you install the latest one.

VSE 8.8 Patch 11 is the latest patch available from the Downloads tab on the ServicePortal at https://support.mcafee.com/downloads.

NOTE: VSE 8.8 Patch 11 supports all supported Windows operating systems.


Perform a system restart to allow the system to recover.
