On-Demand Scan times increase when scanning USB mass storage devices set to read-only
Technical Articles ID:   KB89788
Last Modified:  9/13/2017

Environment

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.8 with or without Patch 1 to 9
Microsoft Windows 7

USB Mass Storage devices (configured to be read-only)

Problem

When an On-Demand Scan (ODS) is performed on a USB mass storage device that is configured to be read-only, the duration of the ODS is greatly increased. For  example, an ODS that should take 10 minutes to complete will take 50 minutes on USB devices set to read-only.

NOTE: To verify whether the storage device is set to read-only, see the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies\"WriteProtect"=dword:00000001

Cause

VSE 8.8 had an issue with a set file attributes on read-only media that resulted in the extended ODS times.

Solution

This issue is resolved in VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 Update 10, which is available from the Product Downloads site at: http://mcafee.com/us/downloads/downloads.aspx.

NOTE: You need a valid Grant Number for access. KB56057 provides additional information about the Product Downloads site, and alternate locations for some products.

Updates are cumulative; Technical Support recommends that you install the latest one.

VSE 8.8 Update 11 is the latest update available from the Downloads tab on the ServicePortal at https://support.mcafee.com/downloads.

NOTE: VSE 8.8 Update 11 supports all supported Windows operating systems.
