McAfee Endpoint Security (ENS) 10.5.2
McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.8.x

During an installation or upgrade to ENS 10.5.2, an error occurs during the installation process that causes an MSI pop-up error. Installation is successful, but systems occasionally get the following pop-up error:
Error 1336. There was an error creating a temporary file that is needed to complete this installation. Folder: C:\Program Files\McAfee\Endpoint Security\Threat Prevention. System error code: 5.

System Change

This issue occurs in the following scenarios:
  • You installed or deployed ENS 10.5.1 over VSE and upgraded to ENS 10.5.2.
  • You installed or deployed ENS 10.5.2.

C:\Program Files[(x86)]\McAfee\Endpoint Security\Threat Prevention\IPS\HipHandlers64.dll is not present. Because of the file missing from the IPS directory, MSI repair attempts to repair the installation and fails because of a lack of permission.

This issue is resolved in Endpoint Security 10.5.3, which is available from the Product Downloads site at: http://mcafee.com/us/downloads/downloads.aspx.

NOTE: You need a valid Grant Number for access. KB56057 provides additional information about the Product Downloads site, and alternate locations for some products.

Updates are cumulative; Technical Support recommends that you install the latest one.

To work around this issue:
  1. Disable ENS Self Protection. From the ENS console, navigate to Settings, Common, and disable Self-protection.
  2. Click Update now in the ENS console and wait for the update to complete.
  3. Enable ENS Self Protection.
