McAfee Endpoint Product Removal (EPR) tool


There are many ways to uninstall McAfee software. Reasons for uninstalling might include migration to newer products such as Endpoint Security, or a need to clean up your system for maintenance purposes, with the intent to reinstall later.

The most common methods are:
  • Migrations and upgrades using Endpoint Upgrade Assistant (EUA) (see KB88141)
  • The use of ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) Client Tasks (see the "Uninstall product software from systems" section of PD26459)
  • Locally using Windows Apps & features.
There are also instances where these methods might fail, and when these methods all fail, you can use the EPR tool.

IMPORTANT: Technical Support does not recommend using the EPR tool as your primary method for uninstalling McAfee products, nor when you have uninstallation issues for the first time. The EPR tool is intended as a last resort option when standard uninstallation methods have failed.

If it has been determined that the EPR tool is needed after all standard methods for uninstallation have proved unsuccessful, always make sure that you use the latest available version. You must not use an older version of the EPR tool to remove newer versions of McAfee software. If you try this, unexpected results might occur. For this reason, EPR tool releases are designed to expire every 90 days. For information about the latest versions of McAfee software that a version of the EPR tool can remove, and the supported Windows operating systems, see the User Guide for that version of the EPR tool. 

EUA can determine when product removal is needed before you install other software. So, if the goal of uninstallation is to install another version of a product, McAfee advises using EUA. For more information, see the latest version of the Endpoint Upgrade Assistant Product Guide.

The EPR tool is available to any customer with an active Grant Number that contains licensing for any one product for which EPR supports removal.

To download the EPR tool from the Product Downloads site:
  1. Navigate to the Product Downloads site at: http://www.mcafee.com/us/downloads/downloads.aspx.
  2. Log on with your Grant Number and email address, and fill out the Captcha.
  3. Search for Endpoint Product Removal, or in Filters select Utilities and Connectors.
  4. Locate, select, and download the latest version of the Endpoint Product Removal tool.
If you meet criteria for access to EPR, but are unable to see it available for download, contact your local sales representative for assistance with review of your licensing. 

Use of the EPR tool:
The following are requirements and best practices to run the EPR tool successfully:
  • Run the EPR tool with Administrator permissions.
  • Run the EPR tool locally from the system you are remediating. Do not, for example, execute the EPR tool from a network share.
  • When deploying the EPR tool from ePO, make sure that you have supplied the mandatory command-line arguments when you create your deployment task.
  • Usually, --ALL removal must not be used. We recommend that you use specific managed product arguments to remove products. Example: --accepteula --VSE --MA
