Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 is incorrectly reported by McAfee Agent 5.6 as a Workstation instead of Server

Environment

McAfee Agent (MA) 5.6.0

Problem

After you successfully install McAfee Agent 5.6.0 on an Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 (Server), it is incorrectly reported back to the ePO Server and tagged Workstation, and not with the correct and expected Server tag.

Cause

Ubuntu Server Xenial 16.04, does not include information about the OS type in the file /etc/os-release. So, it is not possible to determine whether the system is a Workstation or a Server, and it is wrongly assigned the Workstation tag in ePolicy Orchestrator.

Solution

We investigated this issue and a Proof of Concept (POC) Build is currently available to resolve the issue. To obtain the POC Build, log on to the ServicePortal and create a Service Request. Include this article number in the Problem Description field.

The POC now looks at the Ubuntu desktop packages; if they are not present, the system is tagged Server.
