Environment

McAfee Network Security Manager (NSM)

Problem

After you upgrade to the latest release, Network Security Manager service fails to start.

You reboot the virtual machine where the Manager is installed and run the tms.bat batch file located in: C:\Program Files\McAfee\Network Security Manager\App\bin
You see the following errors listed:

Error occurred during initialization of VMjava/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/object
SEVERE: The required Server component failed to start so Tomcat is unable to start

Cause

The Manager service fails to start after an upgrade if the Java processes for the Network Security Manager run in the background during the upgrade.

Solution

Reboot the Network Security Manager server.
View the status of the Manager service:
- If the Manager service is not running:
  1. Open a command-line session.
  2. Type cd:\Program Files\McAfee\Network Security Manager\App\bin\ and press Enter.
  3. Run tms.bat and view the output.
    Type tms.bat and press Enter.
  4. View the output for one of the following errors:
    
    Error occurred during initialization of VMjava/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/object
    Or:
    The required Server component failed to start …. Caused by: java.lang.NoSuchMethodError
    - If you see one of the above mentioned errors, stop the Watchdog service.
      1. Open Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, Services.
      2. In the Services window, make sure all services including the java.exe processes about the Network Security Manager are stopped.
      3. KIll all java.exe processes running in background.
      4. Rerun the NSM installer.
    - If you do not see the above errors:
      Further troubleshooting is required, beyond the scope of this article.
      1. Copy the contents of your command-line session and paste them into a text file.
        Save this text file with a name of output.txt.
      2. Use Infocollector to collect full Minimum Escalation Requirement (MER) files from the manager with this issue.

      3. Open a support case and attach the output.txt and MER files to the case.
- If the manager service is running:
  1. Use Infocollector to collect full Minimum Escalation Requirement (MER) files from the manager with this issue.

  2. Open a support case and attach the MER files to the case.
