Environment

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) 5.9.x

Problem

The ePO server upgrade fails.

During the upgrade, you see the following message:

ePO Setup is "Rolling back" after "installing core setup files"

The EPO5100-Install-MSI.log records the following errors:

C:\Program Files (x86)\McAfee\ePolicy Orchestrator\Installer\core\build.xml:1702: org.xml.sax.SAXParseException; systemId: file:/C:/PROGRA~2/McAfee/EPOLIC~1/server/conf/orion/log-config.xml; lineNumber: 131; columnNumber: 3; The element type "root" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "</root>".

The Core-upgrade.log file records the following errors:
upgrade-log-config-xml:
[upgrade-log-config-xml] Ignoring System dtd null, file:/C:/PROGRA~2/McAfee/EPOLIC~1/server/conf/orion/log4j.dtd
[upgrade-log-config-xml] [Fatal Error] log-config.xml:131:3: The element type "root" must be terminated by the matching end-tag "</root>".

System Change

You modified the debug log level for the Orion.log file while you edited the log-config.xml file.

The log-config.xml file default path was modified: <ePO_installation_folder>\Server\conf\orion

Cause

In the log-config.xml file, <\root> is missing. The <root> is the closed html string for Tomcat debug logging, and must be available in the file.

Solution

Make sure that the quotes in the log-config.xml file are closed correctly:

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the appropriate location based on your version of Windows.
NOTE: Default path: ePO_installation_directory\Server\conf\orion
Right-click log-config.xml, and click Edit. Notepad opens the file.
Scroll to the bottom of the file, and locate the section <root>:

Example: Setting on a problem system:
<root>
<priority value ="debug" />
<appender-ref ref="ROLLING"/>

</log4j:configuration>
</root>

Example- Default settings:
<root>
<priority value ="warn" />
<appender-ref ref="ROLLING"/>

</root>
</log4j:configuration>
Copy the last two lines from the default settings example, and replace the two last lines in the problem file.
Click File, Save.
Click File, Close.
Restart the ePO services:
1. Click Start, Run, type services.msc, and click OK.
2. Right-click the following services and select Restart:
  
  McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator x.x.x Application Server
  McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator x.x.x Server
  McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator x.x.x Event Parser
3. Close the services window.
4. Reapply the upgrade.
