Summary
A malicious document builder (maldoc), known as "EtterSilent," is being sold on the underground market. The seller is offering one weaponized maldoc which exploits a flaw in Microsoft Office classified under CVE-2017-8570 and one document that uses a malicious macro. Victims are presented with a fake document mimicking a template from the popular DocuSign electronic signature software. Excel 4.0 macros stored in a hidden sheet, regsvr32 or rundll32 are used for execution and to download a payload from an actor-controlled website. Various backdoors and remote access trojans including Gozi, Qbot, Trickbot, IcedID, and Bazar are then dropped onto the infected system.
The McAfee Enterprise ATR Team gathers and analyzes information from multiple open and closed sources before disseminating intelligence reports.
This campaign was researched by Intel 471 and shared publicly.

Minimum set of Manual Rules to improve protection to block this campaign
IMPORTANT: Always follow best practices when you enable new rules and signatures.
When you implement new rules or signatures, always set them to Report mode first and check the alerts generated. Resolve any issues that arise and then set the rules to Block. This step mitigates against triggering false positives and allows you to refine your configuration.
For more information, see KB87843 - List of and best practices for Endpoint Security Dynamic Application Containment rules.
